Sustainable photocatalysis
The AIF (Iberian Photocatalysis Association) describes this process as “the photosynthesis of urban surfaces.” The chemical reaction is achieved through a catalyst, titanium dioxide, which transforms nitrogen oxide into solid nitrites and nitrates (non-pollutants). The interaction of water—to remove the particles that remain after photocatalysis—and ultraviolet light—to activate the catalyst—is also necessary.
“Photocatalysis is the photosynthesis of urban surfaces”
Photocatalysis has existed since the 70s and is highly developed in other countries, such as Japan, where there is a photocatalytic university in charge of studying this process. If a technology capable of decontaminating is already available to society, why isn’t it more widespread? David Almazán, president of the AIF (www.fotocatalisis.org), explains that the association has been collaborating with many city councils for years and that, specifically, the Barcelona City Council has made it a condition to consider the use of photocatalytic products to “reduce pollution and to generate the self-cleaning process.”
Photocatalytic pavement in the Nautical Port of L’Estartit, Girona
The first phase of the remodeling of the Nautical Port of L’Estartit means the complete renovation of the infrastructure and the expansion of access to the docking area. The new Garbí breakwater allows for hosting vessels up to 45 m in length and guaranteeing the supply of energy and water, recycling islands, and environmental and safety equipment required by these vessels. The paving of the access to the docking area has been carried out with AirClean ® 24x16x6cm and 60x40x7cm photocatalytic pavers and slabs with a total of 2,000 m² of decontaminating urban surface that also provides the desired aesthetic value.
