A New Civic Space in the Heart of Manchester

Crown Square has established itself as one of Manchester’s most vibrant and iconic public squares. Conceived as a grand civic space, the intervention transforms a site originally intended for offices into a meeting point for urban life, gastronomy, and coexistence. The project addresses the need to create a space for leisure and interaction within an environment dominated by business buildings, providing warmth, identity, and dynamism to the city’s financial district.

The proposal redefines the limits of the urban environment through a slight modification of the plot’s geometry, visually and physically expanding the available space. The square thus extends to the facades of the surrounding buildings, integrating organically into the existing urban fabric. The design generates a continuous sequence of connected subspaces, where the Oast House—a historic building converted into a restaurant-bar—is integrated as a central element of the complex. Rather than a contrast between old and new, the intervention establishes a fluid dialogue between both, creating a natural transition between history and contemporaneity.

Crown Square is structured around three conceptual elements—fire, air, and earth—which symbolize different ways of inhabiting the space. Fire is represented by the grill and gathering area; air through the pergolas that offer shade and shelter; and earth with the edicules and tiered seating that form the amphitheater and lounge areas. The tectonic materials and natural textures provide a sense of stability and comfort, while the varying levels and bleachers encourage users to take ownership of the space.

The pavement of the square combines Llosa Vulcano® and Terana® six, creating a robust, aesthetic, and functional surface. Llosa Vulcano® provides architectural character, uniformity, and resistance, while Terana® six introduces dynamism and a versatile texture that accompanies pedestrian paths, seating areas, and the most demanding transit zones. The combination of both materials reinforces the visual continuity of the space, provides comfort and durability, and contributes to generating a solid and contemporary identity for the square.

Crown Square reinterprets the classic concept of a European square: a public space where socializing, relaxing, and enjoying the outdoors are part of the community’s daily life. Today, it is one of Manchester’s most active and renowned places, symbolizing how urban design can create identity, social cohesion, and a high-quality experience for its users.
