Urban Renovation with Descontaminating Pavement AirClean®

Located in the Vila Olímpica neighborhood, Avenida Icaria has undergone a comprehensive renovation of its central promenade. This intervention stems from a participatory process with local residents, which aimed to preserve the original structure of the walkway while substantially improving accessibility, lighting, and sustainability. The project was led by Miquel Espinet and Antoni Ubach, with management by Copcisa, and involved the enhancement of 8,000 m² of public space.

One of the most innovative elements of this renovation has been the incorporation of Breinco’s Llosa Vulcano AirClean®, a photocatalytic pavement that reduces air pollution. Thanks to its technology, pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) are transformed into harmless compounds upon contact with sunlight and water, creating healthier, self-cleaning surfaces without altering the urban aesthetic.

In addition, tactile pavement has been installed for visually impaired users, enhancing the accessibility of the promenade. The tactile elements serve as warning signals in crossing points or changes in level, providing safety and inclusivity along the pedestrian route.

Avenida Icaria, the main axis of Vila Olímpica since 1992, thus regains its vitality as an urban space with a distinct identity, open to daily life, commerce, and pedestrian mobility. It is an example of how design and innovation in paving can enhance the environmental and functional quality of cities.
