The remodeling of Port of Mataró has transformed what was once a secondary space into a vibrant and multifunctional urban enclave, where modernization is combined with respect for the natural environment. Situated next to a Natura 2000 network protected area and adjacent to a posidonia meadow, the port reinforces the ecological importance of the zone and establishes itself as one of the largest and most sustainable in Catalonia.
The project prioritizes pedestrian and cycling mobility, offering fluid and accessible routes that allow users to enjoy the landscape, the sea, and the green areas. The waterfront promenades are combined with terraces, pergolas, and seating areas that create welcoming spaces for leisure and social interaction, while the bike lanes and the integration of parking facilities ensure a harmonious coexistence between different modes of transport.
The leisure and cultural spaces have been enhanced with platforms for concerts and events next to the Hotel Atenea Port, recreational zones, playfully shaped benches, and an interactive fountain at the entrance, which has become an iconic element of the port. Every corner is designed to generate pleasant and safe experiences, promoting the participation of visitors of all ages.
The paving of the port combines different systems that provide functionality, durability, and aesthetic continuity. Llosa Vulcano® and Terana® six are incorporated into promenades, seating areas, and pedestrian zones, integrating Air Clean® technology, which reduces atmospheric pollution through a photocatalytic effect activated by sunlight. Superstep® is used in transit areas with higher demands for safety and comfort, offering a stable, non-slip finish that is pleasant to the touch. The combination of these pavements articulates the various uses of the port, reinforces the identity of the space, and visually connects the pathways and seating areas.
The result is a renovated, open, accessible, and welcoming port, where design, functionality, and nature combine to create an attractive and safe environment. Every promenade and seating area invites visitors to explore, enjoy, and interact in contact with the sea and the city, consolidating the Port of Mataró as an urban, landscape, and environmental benchmark.
