Maritime infrastructure with AirClean® photocatalytic paver
Located in the heart of the Costa Brava, the l’Estartit nautical port has established itself as a benchmark in sustainability and energy efficiency. The project, led by the studio Aspecte Paisatge (Martirià Figueres i Feixas), transforms this coastal enclave into a 21st-century infrastructure, prioritizing accessibility, functionality, and environmental respect.
The first phase of the remodeling involved the complete renovation of the port facilities, with the construction of the new Garbí dike and the conditioning of the pedestrian access at the foot of the boats. This area has been paved with AirClean® photocatalytic pavers and slabs (in 24x16x7 cm and 60x40x7 cm formats), covering a total of 2,000 m² with a paver capable of decontaminating urban air.
Thanks to the photocatalytic technology incorporated into the surface, these materials activate a chemical process with sunlight that transforms nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrates, improving air quality. This paver also features self-cleaning properties, which reduces maintenance costs and extends its lifespan.
The use of AirClean® in the l’Estartit port not only provides a contemporary and functional aesthetic, but also reflects a firm commitment to active construction solutions in the fight against atmospheric pollution.
This pioneering project demonstrates how smart materials can integrate sustainability, design, and technology in high-performance coastal infrastructure.
The project is completed with urban furniture and elements that support leisure and walking, reinforcing the users’ experience and the functionality of the port. The combination of photocatalytic paving and sustainable design solutions turns the port of l’Estartit into an example of how innovation, technology, and aesthetics can be integrated into high-performance maritime infrastructure.
