Maritime Infrastructure with AirClean® Photocatalytic Pavement

Located in the heart of the Costa Brava, the l’Estartit marina has established itself as a benchmark in sustainability and energy efficiency. The project, led by the design studio Aspecte Paisatge (Martirià Figueres and Feixas), transforms this coastal site into a 21st-century infrastructure, prioritizing accessibility, functionality, and environmental respect.

The first phase of the renovation involved a complete upgrade of the port facilities, including the construction of the new Garbí breakwater and the development of the pedestrian access at the dockside. This area has been paved with Breinco’s AirClean® photocatalytic cobblestones and slabs (in 24×16×7 cm and 60×40×7 cm formats), covering a total of 2,000 m² with a pavement capable of purifying urban air.

Thanks to the photocatalytic technology integrated into the surface, these materials trigger a chemical process with sunlight that transforms nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrates, improving air quality. This pavement also has self-cleaning properties, which reduce maintenance costs and extend its service life.

The use of AirClean® at the l’Estartit marina not only provides a contemporary and functional aesthetic, but also reflects a strong commitment to active construction solutions in the fight against air pollution.

This pioneering project demonstrates how smart materials can integrate sustainability, design, and technology in high-performance coastal infrastructures.
