GUIDING PLAN<\/h4>\n

The urban regeneration of Barcelona that began in the 1980s focused mainly on dignifying this space. The Olympic city accelerated the execution of these projects, emphasizing public space. However, Barcelona\u2019s urban fabric still has shortcomings. The struggle for urban greenery, led by the campaigns of the 1980s, seemed to have been left behind, behind words such as \u201cefficiency\u201d, smart<\/em> or \u201ctechnological innovation\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In terms of green space rankings, the city is not particularly favorable: densely populated metropolises such as New York or even industrial cities such as Rotterdam largely surpass it in urban green space per capita.<\/p>\n

Passeig de Sant Joan was intervened in 1985 in Pla\u00e7a Tetuan and in 1998 in the upper section between Avinguda Diagonal and Travessera de Gr\u00e0cia, changing pavement, improving flowerbeds, installing playgrounds and a bicycle lane.<\/p>\n

But the history of Passeig de Sant Joan began in the 18th century, with the construction of the Ciutadella Fort. Between the Fort and the current Carrer del Rec there was an area urbanized between 1795 and 1802, called Passeig de Sant Joan (although it does not match the current location).<\/p>\n

In 1859, Ildefons Cerd\u00e0 proposed the 20 m street grid of Barcelona\u2019s Eixample, where main avenues stood out with a 50-meter section with a central roadway and sidewalks with double rows of trees.<\/p>\n

Passeig de Sant Joan is one of these avenues, along with Gran Via, Paral\u00b7lel and Passeig de Gr\u00e0cia. It was laid out as an extension of that promenade and became a 50-meter-wide, 2 km-long avenue connecting Ciutat Vella with Gr\u00e0cia. Cerd\u00e0\u2019s idea was to connect Gr\u00e0cia with Barceloneta, but this was not possible due to the presence of Parc de la Ciutadella and, above all, the railway lines.<\/p>\n

Decades later, another event reinforced the importance of this avenue: the 1888 Universal Exhibition, introducing the Arc de Triomf as the gateway to the exhibition.<\/p>\n

The sidewalks are distributed functionally: a 6 m area with traditional 20\u00d720 cm panot tiles for pedestrian access to homes and shops, and an 11 m area between sidewalk and roadway with vegetation (existing and new). This area varies depending on activities along the section: seating areas, playgrounds, terraces, etc.<\/p>\n

A system of native shrubs was introduced to enhance biodiversity and the subsoil. The idea was to define three vertical typologies and three chromatic typologies to provide visual variability.<\/p>\n

The continuous and coherent proposal has prevented green spaces from becoming urban interruptions, creating a continuous green layer and reducing motor traffic.<\/p>\n

Road lanes were reduced: from three per direction, one was removed per side, leaving one traffic lane and one bus lane in each direction.<\/p>\n

Smell of damp soil: permeable pavement versus hard pavement<\/h4>\n

Transferring the atmosphere of Parc de la Ciutadella to Passeig de Sant Joan could not be superficial, but structural: introducing vegetation only in planters and paving everything else with concrete was not enough.<\/p>\n

The use of a permeable pavement<\/strong> supports the project\u2019s eco-efficiency philosophy. In Barcelona, 64% of the soil is sealed, which limits rainwater infiltration.<\/p>\n

The green is walked on, breathed and smelled: it is not a contemplative green, but a livable green that changes with light and seasons.<\/p>\n

The space is organized leaving 6 meters free for pedestrian circulation and 11 meters for green areas. The roadway is reduced and traffic is calmed, adding a segregated bicycle lane.<\/p>\n

The system adapts to each section without losing continuity.<\/p>\n

Usable green strip<\/h4>\n

The success of the solution lies in providing different uses to the space between fa\u00e7ades and roadway, with a continuity that users can adapt.<\/p>\n

Next to buildings is pedestrian circulation, followed by a gradient toward green areas.<\/p>\n

This strip includes seating areas, playgrounds, terraces and other uses, always maintaining its green character through planting beds and permeable pavement with open joints.<\/p>\n

Existing trees are preserved and new alignments are added.<\/p>\n

The permeable pavement is built on a granular base with precast concrete blocks and open joints of variable width. They are laid without mortar, with joints that can be filled with substrate or aggregate depending on use.<\/p>\n

8,000 m\u00b2 of Llosa Vulcano<\/a> 30x10x10 cm concrete blocks in ash color were installed, with biodegradable spacers of 3.5 cm.<\/p>\n

The 10 cm thickness provides stability and mechanical resistance for both pedestrians and occasional vehicle access.<\/p>\n

Standard and Top Complete finishes are combined.<\/p>\n

The biodegradable joint system Rasen Mohr<\/a> resolves different green joint widths.<\/p>\n

The blocks contain recycled aggregate and resistant pigments, and are environmentally safe.<\/p>\n

In 2012 Passeig de Sant Joan was a finalist of the FAD Awards<\/a> in the City and Landscape category.<\/p>\n
