Concrete of the 21st century"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC)<\/h4>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1026\" src=\"https:\/\/www.breinco.com\/smartideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/logo-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"150\" \/> <\/p>\n<h5>What is it called internationally?<\/h5>\n<p> These are fiber-reinforced concretes with very high fiber content, to the point that internationally they are no longer only referred to as UHPC, but more precisely as UHPFRC, meaning <strong>Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete<\/strong>; in French BFUP: B\u00e9ton Fibr\u00e9 \u00e0 Ultra-Haute Performance. <\/p>\n<h5>What type of fibers are used? What advantages do they provide?<\/h5>\n<p> The fibers, very fine (around 0.2\u20130.3 mm thick), are typically steel fibers coated with copper or brass. They are used in proportions as high as 150 kg\/m\u00b3. Their role is not only to achieve strength, but especially to provide ductility, preventing brittle failure. <\/p>\n<h5>What is the consistency of UHPC?<\/h5>\n<p> They are generally \u201cwet-cast\u201d concretes rather than \u201cdry-cast,\u201d although both are possible. Wet-cast mixes allow better workability and performance in achieving the required strength and ductility. <\/p>\n<h5>Is there any standardization?<\/h5>\n<p> As of June 2018, there is no Spanish standard or instruction yet, though development work is underway. French and Swiss standards already exist. <\/p>\n<h5>What are the compressive characteristics? Water\/cement ratio?<\/h5>\n<p> UHPC requires a minimum characteristic compressive strength of <strong>150 MPa<\/strong> (around 1,500 kg\/cm\u00b2). It is also tested in direct tension and flexural tension. Failure must occur beyond the proportional limit, ensuring ductile behavior.<\/p>\n<p>In some architectural cases, 130 MPa may be accepted for aesthetic requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Water\/cement ratios are very low, typically between 0.18 and 0.22, achieved through high-range water-reducing admixtures and very fine particle packing. Cement contents are high (around 800 kg\/m\u00b3), plus approximately 200 kg\/m\u00b3 of silica fume.<\/p>\n<h5>What durability does UHPC have?<\/h5>\n<p> It is extremely compact, with very low absorption and permeability, resulting in significantly higher durability than conventional concrete.<\/p>\n<p>It can be reinforced and prestressed, enabling very lightweight structural elements. In Switzerland it is used for bridge deck rehabilitation, and in France for architectural precast elements.<\/p>\n<p>Some experts even state: <strong>\u201cUHPC is not concrete\u201d<\/strong>, considering it a new material.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/es.linkedin.com\/in\/francisco-javier-reg%C3%A1s-arimany-b0670415a\">Javier Reg\u00e1s<\/a> \u2014 Engineering Consultant at Architectonic Concrete S.L. since 1999.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1023\" src=\"https:\/\/www.breinco.com\/smartideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/la-gardunya-mobiliario-hormigon-uhpc.jpg\" alt=\"urban furniture UHPC concrete\" width=\"700\" height=\"500\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.breinco.com\/smartideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/dibujo-mobiliario-urbano.jpg\" alt=\"urban furniture drawing\" width=\"700\" height=\"500\" \/> <\/p>\n<h4>Surface finishes of UHPC concrete<\/h4>\n<h4>Simple finish \u201cas demoulded\u201d<\/h4>\n<p> A piece can be cast with a perfectly smooth appearance given by the mold itself. The surface may remain clean and untreated, possibly including specific textures or reliefs integrated into the mold design.<\/p>\n<p>This allows virtually unlimited design possibilities, from smooth or textured surfaces to engraved drawings, photographs, or patterns.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1019\" src=\"https:\/\/www.breinco.com\/smartideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/acabado-superficial-simple-hormig\u00f3n.jpg\" alt=\"simple finish\" width=\"700\" height=\"500\" \/> <\/p>\n<h4>STRIP finish (acid-washed \/ exposed aggregate)<\/h4>\n<p> The strip finish is slightly rough to the touch. It exposes the natural color and texture of the aggregates on a smooth but sand-like surface.
