Coloured concrete<\/h1>\n

Coloured concrete is mainly composed of several inert elements: sand, aggregates, cement, water, and in some cases, admixtures. When pigments are added, they only colour the cement matrix, meaning the products that react with water to form a hydrated cement gel.<\/p>\n

<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The colouring effect of pigments depends not only on pigment concentration in the mix and the particle size of the cement used, but also on other variable factors such as pigment dispersion, surface texture, and in some cases, the appearance of efflorescence. To achieve optimal colouring of concrete, these latter factors must be controlled without changing either the formulation or the production stages.<\/p>\n

The colour of the pigment used to colour the cement is determined by light reflection and absorption indices. White light includes the full spectrum of colours, which can be easily observed when a raindrop disperses daylight to form a rainbow. Pigments only reflect part of the spectrum, as most light is absorbed. The more light is reflected, the brighter the resulting colour.<\/p>\n

Light reflection depends mainly on the surface of the substrate. Thus, if the same product coloured with the same amount of the same pigment has a finer surface than usual, its colour will appear more intense and brighter than if the same surface is rougher.<\/p>\n

To fully develop their colouring strength, pigments must be well dispersed. The degree of dispersion depends on the type of pigment (dispersion energy) but also, to a large extent, on the consistency of the concrete. Less rigid concrete allows better dispersion of all components, including the pigment. The plasticity of the concrete mix also influences surface structure.<\/p>\n

Even when the pigment is well dispersed and the surface of the final product is smooth, the colour can be negatively affected by efflorescence, which results from the reaction between water and cement. However, with appropriate measures, it can be reduced, although never completely eliminated. This requires optimisation of the production process and raw materials, as well as the use of admixtures to reduce efflorescence (no known additive can eliminate it entirely), and careful control of curing and storage.<\/p>\n

Properties of micro-granulated pigment<\/h1>\n

The newly developed pigments used by BREINCO are highly fluid micro-granulates based on high-quality synthetic pigments (iron oxide, chromium oxide, titanium dioxide, carbon black pigment). In addition, a special additive system enhances colour development and improves workability.<\/p>\n

Resistant to ultraviolet radiation<\/h1>\n

The pigments used in the manufacture of kerbs, steps, and channels are iron oxides that ensure colour resistance to ultraviolet rays and weather conditions. The colour remains over the years and is completely environmentally harmless<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Using high-quality pigments also makes it possible to achieve consistent chromatic tones and high colouring power.<\/p>\n

Requirements for concrete pigments:
\n\u00b7 Resistance to atmospheric agents.
\n\u00b7 Light (UV) resistance.
\n\u00b7 Resistance to alkaline substances (pH approximately 12).
\n\u00b7 Resistance to high temperatures, up to 120\u00baC.
\n\u00b7 No discolouration due to rain.
\n\u00b7 No environmental risk.<\/p>\n

Suitable pigments:
\n\u00b7 Iron oxides (yellow, orange, red, brown and black).
\n\u00b7 Cobalt-aluminium, cobalt-chromium, cobalt-nickel-zinc-titanium or cobalt-chromium-aluminium oxides (green, blue-green and blue).
\n\u00b7 Titanium oxides (white).
\n\u00b7 Some organic colours, which nevertheless show high resistance to light, alkalis and heat.<\/p>\n

Synthetic iron oxides<\/h1>\n

Coloured concrete can be obtained using natural and synthetic iron oxides. Currently, synthetic ones are preferred because:
\n\u00b7 They can be produced in virtually any colour shade (except green, blue, and white).
\n\u00b7 They allow low-cost coloured concrete production.
\n\u00b7 They ensure brighter colours and higher colouring strength.
\n\u00b7 Their chromatic tones and colouring power can be controlled more effectively.<\/p>\n

BREINCO uses micro-granulated pigments, which offer several advantages over powder or liquid paste forms. They are almost 100% pigment, without added water to the concrete, no sedimentation, no freezing issues, high apparent density, no dust, no residue in bags, clean handling, high colouring power, and the organic dispersants contained within ensure better dispersion.<\/p>\n
