Kodolé Paving Breinco Silver Delta Award

Kodolé, Breinco's draining paving, wins the Silver Delta Award for being a design with an ecological mission: water can flow through the pavement, plants can also grow, and the system allows for different compositions. The idea is to create discontinuous surfaces in our cities, allowing nature to emerge, blurring and replacing the grey of continuous concrete.

Kodolé by Breinco – Silver Delta Award

The Kodolé draining mixed paving by Breinco, designed by Olga Tarrasó Climent and Julia Espinàs Casas (Espinàs i Tarrasó architects), was the winner of the Silver Delta Award in the Outdoor Equipment category. This was the jury’s evaluation:

“For being a design with an ecological mission, water can flow through the pavement, plants can also grow, and the system allows for different compositions. The idea is to create discontinuous surfaces in our cities, allowing nature to emerge, blurring and replacing the grey of continuous concrete.”

Due to the constraints brought by the COVID-19 pandemic and with the aim of complying with safety measures, this year the ceremony was held via streaming and can be viewed on the ADI-FAD YouTube channel. ADI Awards 2020

On November 24, 2020, the ADI Awards 2020 were presented, organized by the ADI-FAD Industrial Design Association. These awards bring together the main recognitions in the field of product design in Spain: the Delta Awards, for industrial design professionals and companies, granted since 1961; the ADI Medals, for product design students, awarded since 1976 in collaboration with the Banco Sabadell Foundation; and the ADI Cultura Awards, for projects that promote and value design culture, including a career award recognizing the work of professionals or entities in the design field.

Salvi Plaja, president of the ADI-FAD association, highlights the importance of recognizing the role of industry and the urgent need to integrate design even further into companies.

“Design is critical to the success of companies, to the future of our economy, and to the reindustrialization of the country. Design can save companies on the verge of closing or rescue the economy of a country on the edge of the abyss.”

In its 40th edition, the awards gave visibility to multidisciplinary teams, work carried out by design teams integrated within companies, as well as the design of high-tech, ergonomic, or customizable products, thanks to the use of technologies such as 3D printing or AI-driven generative design.

All selected products are part of the ADI Book 2020, a new publication replacing the catalog of previous editions, edited this year by Experimenta. Furthermore, the winners will become part of the permanent collection of the “Museu del Disseny” in Barcelona and, along with the other selected entries, will be featured in a future exhibition.

The jury consisted of Davide Groppi, Matali Crasset, Frank Zierenberg, Marta Alonso, and Vicenç Aguilera.

Kodolé Draining Mixed Paving

KODOLÉ is a mixed paving system of triangle-shaped pavers that includes a built-in nib at the base of the unit. This section facilitates the placement of the pavers to achieve a pavement with a fillable joint. The use of spacer elements is not required.

Among the properties of Kodolé, we find:

  • Draining: It creates a 2 cm surface that enhances its permeability capacity.
  •

  • Easy installation: The patented Taló-System built into the base of the unit facilitates installation without spacer elements.
  •

  • Adaptable: Its triangular shape provides the ability to adapt to any paving area, including organic shapes. Cutting pieces is not necessary.
  •

  • Green joint: Cooler paved surface.
  •

  • Aesthetic value: 6 different colors to design any combination.

The featured characteristics allow Kodolé to provide the following benefits:

  • Runoff water quantity control: Maintains and protects the natural water cycle. Flood prevention. Aquifer recharge through infiltration.
  •

  • Runoff water quality control: Reduction of the “heat island” effect in cities. Decreases air pollution and pollutants reaching the receiving environment.
  •

  • Comfort and livability: Creates a more comfortable urban environment and improves the quality of life for inhabitants.
  •

  • Biodiversity: Creates and maintains a better place for nature, increasing the number, abundance, and distribution of species.
