The extension of the Clínica Creu Blanca in Barcelona is conceived as a strategic intervention that reinforces the functionality and healthcare capacity of the complex, while simultaneously respecting the strong heritage and urban value of the original building. The tower, built in 1920 as the residence of Isidra Pons de Pascual, has consolidated over time as a prominent visual landmark, especially after the opening of Avinguda J. V. Foix, from which the imposing exposed brick and stone retaining wall, topped by a continuous balustrade, can be perceived.
The intervention is developed behind this historic facade, where a three-story extension is executed. Although all of them are below ground level with respect to Passeig de Reina Elisenda, they are at street level from the access to the new volume on Avinguda J. V. Foix, effectively resolving the complex topography of the area. The new program incorporates a parking floor that significantly improves accessibility to the clinic, a floor dedicated to outpatient consultations with the creation of nearly twenty new rooms, and a third floor that expands the surgical block, doubling the number of operating rooms from four to eight.
In the outdoor spaces of the complex, Tegula®-tec has been incorporated—a paving solution especially suitable for zones subjected to intensive use and vehicular traffic. Thanks to its horizontal and vertical interlocking system, this paver guarantees high pavement stability, preventing displacement, rotation of the pieces, or deformations caused by vehicle loads and maneuvering. Its application efficiently resolves the outdoor access and circulation areas, providing robustness, safety, and durability, while integrating seamlessly with the architectural image of the healthcare complex.
The result is an extension that combines respect for the existing heritage, functional improvement, and high-performance technical solutions, consolidating the Clínica Creu Blanca as a leading healthcare facility integrated into the urban fabric of Barcelona.
