Located in the heart of the Costa Brava, the Port of l’Estartit has established itself as a benchmark for sustainability and urban efficiency. Led by the studio Aspecte Paisatge (Martirià Figueres i Feixas), the project transforms this coastal enclave into a 21st-century infrastructure, prioritizing accessibility, functionality, and environmental respect.
The first phase of the remodeling included the comprehensive renovation of the port facilities, featuring the construction of the new Garbí breakwater and the conditioning of the pedestrian access adjacent to the boats. This area has been paved with Breinco’s AirClean® photocatalytic pavers and slabs (24×16×7 cm and 60×40×7 cm formats), covering a total of 2.000 m² with a pavement capable of decontaminating urban air. Thanks to photocatalytic technology, these materials transform nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrates and feature self-cleaning properties that reduce maintenance costs and extend their lifespan.
The public space also incorporates urban furniture elements designed for relaxation and to encourage users to linger. Notable among these is Pause, a piece with simple lines and a lightweight appearance supported by discrete metal brackets, featuring a smooth finish and matte sheen, weather-resistant, and available in various colors to integrate into the landscape. Additionally, Calma has been incorporated—a classic and solid tropical wood and steel bench designed to generate moments of rest and comfort, offering the versatility to adapt to different urban environments and uses: relaxation, social interaction, or leisure areas.
This project demonstrates how the incorporation of smart pavements and carefully designed urban furniture can enrich a public space, offering functionality, comfort, and respect for the natural and urban environment, while enhancing the experience of those who inhabit it.
