Located in the heart of Costa Brava, the l’Estartit marina has established itself as a benchmark in sustainability and urban efficiency. Led by the studio Aspecte Paisatge (Martirià Figueres i Feixas), the project transforms this coastal enclave into a 21st-century infrastructure, prioritizing accessibility, functionality, and environmental respect.

The first phase of remodeling included the complete renovation of the port facilities, with the construction of the new Garbí breakwater and the conditioning of the pedestrian access next to the boats. This area has been paved with AirClean® photocatalytic pavers and slabs from Breinco (formats 24×16×7 cm and 60×40×7 cm), covering a total of 2,000 m² with a pavement capable of decontaminating urban air.

Thanks to the photocatalytic technology integrated into the surface, these materials trigger a chemical process when exposed to sunlight that transforms nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrates, significantly improving air quality. This paving also features self-cleaning properties, which reduce maintenance costs and extend its useful life.

The use of AirClean® in the port of l’Estartit not only provides a contemporary and functional aesthetic but also reflects a firm commitment to constructive solutions that actively combat air pollution.

This pioneering project demonstrates how smart materials can integrate sustainability, design, and technology into high-performance coastal infrastructure.
