Green urbanism with custom solutions in sustainable concrete
The transformation project of Glòries Square, in the heart of Barcelona, is one of the benchmarks for green urbanism in Europe. Led by the joint venture Agence Ter & Ana Coello de Llobet, the “Canòpia Urbana” plan focuses on a public space model that prioritizes the pedestrian, reduces road traffic, and promotes biodiversity. Across a surface area of more than 20,000 m², Breinco has played a key role, developing custom paver solutions, urban furniture, and landscaping elements.
The main paver is the Llosa Vulcano®, a high-durability sustainable slab made with recycled aggregate and recognized with the environmental quality distinction of the Generalitat. For Glòries, a new light tone was created —Canòpia color— with the aim of reducing the surface temperature in areas exposed to the sun. Formats of 30x10x10cm, 20x10x10cm, and 10x10x8 cm were used.
Custom tactile pavements (Tactile Crossing and Tactile Warning) were also installed, enhancing accessibility for visually impaired users and integrating seamlessly with the urban design.
Using Wetcast® technology, Breinco manufactured special pieces such as linear benches adapted to the wooded environment and high-resistance steps with non-slip signaling. This architectural concrete allows for formal freedom, texture, color, and excellent outdoor performance.
The intervention at Glòries exemplifies how materials designed with sustainability and technical innovation in mind can transform urban spaces to enhance collective well-being.
