The Sants neighborhood, one of the districts with the strongest identity and urban life in Barcelona, has been the subject of various interventions to improve public space. These actions are aimed at reinforcing urban quality, accessibility, and civic use of streets, squares, and landmark facilities such as the Sants Market.
The interventions have been carried out in various areas of the neighborhood, encompassing streets, squares, and meeting spaces, with the goal of creating friendlier environments for pedestrians, fostering coexistence, and boosting the commercial and social activity characteristic of Sants. The project focuses on a coherent urban image, capable of unifying diverse spaces through a common materiality.
Breinco has incorporated the Terana® art paver, a solution specially designed for the development of public spaces. Its design allows for the creation of continuous, accessible, and visually balanced surfaces, adapted for both pedestrian use and areas with occasional vehicle traffic. Terana® art stands out for its resistance, durability, and color stability—essential qualities in high-traffic urban environments such as commercial streets, squares, and municipal markets.
The Llosa Vulcano® has been used, expanding the compositional possibilities of the pavement and providing visual continuity to the set of intervened spaces. Both products incorporate Air Clean® protection, a technology based on photocatalytic materials that actively contributes to improving air quality in the urban environment.
Air Clean® pavements reduce atmospheric pollution through a photocatalytic decontaminating agent that, under the effects of sunlight, triggers the decomposition of polluting oxides (NOx) into by-products that are naturally washed away by rainwater. Furthermore, photocatalytic treatments help reduce bacteria and fight germs, caring for people, the environment, and common spaces.
The combined use of Terana® art and Llosa Vulcano® Air Clean® allows for the visual unification of various spaces within the Sants district, integrating naturally into a consolidated urban fabric and providing a solution that combines design, resistance, and environmental commitment. The result is a network of healthier, more accessible public spaces designed for people, enhancing the value of such representative sites as Antoni de Capmany Street and the Sants Market.
