A new elevated green promenade in Sants district

The Sants district incorporates one of the city’s most distinctive urban projects: an elevated landscaped promenade covering the former railway tracks and re-establishing urban continuity on both sides.

After years of public debate and neighbourhood mobilisation, the project transformed a former railway infrastructure into a continuous green public space extending over 800 metres in length.

The new Barcelona High Line elevates its landscaped areas between four and twelve metres above the surrounding streets, forming a linear promenade that incorporates rest areas, children’s play spaces, sports zones and viewing platforms. This intervention enhances air quality, reduces noise levels and returns to local residents a shared public space once dominated by railway activity.

For the deck paving, 500 m² of concrete paving blocks were installed, manufactured in three tones — Ash, Cor-Ten and Black — adding chromatic depth and visual richness to the overall design. These units incorporate Air-Clean® technology, a photocatalytic solution that helps reduce airborne pollutant oxides and keeps the surface clean through the action of sunlight.

The project complies with the sustainability criteria established by the Barcelona City Council, prioritising recyclable, durable materials that are respectful of the surrounding environment.
