Elche unveils its central bus interchange: more modern and accessible

The Elche Central Bus Interchange, located on Doctor Caro and Alfredo Llopis streets, has completed its renovation, providing a more modern, safe, and sustainable space for residents and travelers. The intervention has transformed one of the city’s busiest hubs, with daily traffic ranging between 15,000 and 30,000 people and over 450 buses.

The project, co-financed with Next Generation EU funds, has allowed for the expansion of pedestrian areas and the pedestrianization of Alfredo Llopis Street, improving pedestrian circulation and providing a more comfortable and accessible environment. In addition, urban transport information areas, a new ticketing zone, bicycle parking, and a Bicielx station have been incorporated, thus promoting sustainable mobility.

One of the most notable features is the installation of a high-strength pavement made with recycled material pavers, which not only ensures durability but also contributes to the reduction of CO₂ emissions. The large central pergola, landscaped areas, and LED lighting complete the renovation, providing shade, safety, and comfort for users.

For the Mobility Councilor, Claudio Guilabert, this intervention represents a , just a few meters from the historic center. ‘It is a positive, city-focused project that improves mobility and the image of this central area. The interchange is now more modern, accessible, and green, benefiting all residents of Elche and the thousands of daily users,’ states Guilabert.

With this renovation, Elche’s central bus interchange is established as a benchmark in urban mobility, prepared for the challenges of today and the future, including the introduction of bus service to the surrounding districts in 2025.
