The Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau is one of the most emblematic Art Nouveau complexes in the world and a historical and cultural landmark in Barcelona. Its pavilions, surrounded by gardens and connected by a network of underground tunnels, offer a unique setting where architecture, history, and nature combine to create spaces for work, research, and coexistence. Following the relocation of hospital activities, the historic Art Nouveau pavilions have been restored to host new uses linked to high-social-impact projects in innovation, sustainability, health, education, and culture.
Within this context, the Panot del Segle XXI flor has been incorporated into the pedestrian areas surrounding the complex’s buildings and gardens. This intervention combines tradition and modernity, reinforcing Barcelona’s visual identity while providing a durable pavement that is resistant to the heavy traffic of visitors and staff, as well as easy to maintain. Its flexible and draining installation allows for optimal rainwater management and helps reduce the heat island effect, integrating harmoniously with the hospital’s landscaped spaces and inner courtyards.
The Panot del Segle XXI (flower design) also brings sustainable properties, such as the reduction of noise pollution and environmental impact, contributing to healthier and more comfortable urban environments. Its flower-motif design enhances the beauty of the Art Nouveau complex, turning the paved surfaces into a recognizable aesthetic element that dialogues with Lluís Domènech i Montaner’s architecture and the garden landscape. The intervention ensures that the outdoor spaces are functional, accessible, and visually coherent, offering patients, visitors, and workers a high-quality, safe environment that represents the city’s cultural heritage.
