The Hotel Princesa Sofía, formerly known as the Hotel Princesa Sofía, is an architectural landmark with 22 floors and a height of 79 meters, located in Plaza Pius XII in Barcelona. Originally inaugurated in the seventies with the goal of modernizing the city, the building has undergone a profound remodeling that has completely updated its image, its operations, and its relationship with the urban environment.
The intervention started from the desire to reinterpret the concept of the contemporary hotel, transforming a building of virtually intact origin into an open, dynamic space connected to the city. The project focused on opening the hotel to the exterior and the neighborhood, establishing a more direct relationship with the public space through landscaping and small-scale urban planning that encourages permeability and civic use.
Among the main interventions, key highlights include the addition of various dining options on the ground floor, a mezzanine with a wide and diverse range of meeting rooms, the comprehensive renovation of the 465 five-star rooms, and the new proposal for the top floor, conceived as a multipurpose rooftop. All of this is articulated through a sophisticated aesthetic, featuring linear lighting in common areas and large windows that maximize the entry of natural light.
The renovation of the building is completed with a new facade image, where the new cladding and the chromatic proposal allow for the differentiation of the complex’s volumes, supported by a two-story plinth resolved with stone tiling that reinforces the hotel’s urban presence.
Committed to the environment and the creation of more sustainable spaces, the Terana® art paver has been incorporated into the hotel’s exterior landscaping, a solution specifically suited for high-traffic spaces. Terana® art provides resistance, durability, and color stability, in addition to allowing for the creation of continuous and accessible surfaces that improve the integration of the building with the surrounding public space.
The result is a renovated hotel that combines architecture, design, and sustainability, establishing itself as a contemporary urban landmark and reinforcing its bond with the city of Barcelona.
